Welcome to South Wigston!
South Wigston is a thriving area of Leicestershire just off the Leicester Ring Road (A563) and approximately 4.7 miles from Leicester City Centre. It has good links to the junctions of the M1 and M69 which are approximately 4.5 miles away. Set in a distinctive conservation area of red brick buildings stemming from the times of Orson Wright – the philanthropist owner of a large local brick works, who built South Wigston over 7 years from 1883 to 1890 with houses for workers and commercial ventures. The settlement followed the tradition of establishing ‘model’ towns set by Victorian philanthropists at places such as Saltaire and Bourneville.
Today, a bustling South Wigston offers a mix of specialist shops selling anything from bikes to bathrooms, crepes to carpets and reptiles to rugs. Office and Industrial areas sit on the edges of the settlement.
Speaking about the retail offer Oadby & Wigston Borough Council’s Economic Development Champion and South Wigston Councillor Sharon Morris said “We are proud to have a community of retailers in South Wigston who offer a huge variety of specialist goods down to those everyday items, while providing good old-fashioned customer service.”
South Wigston has its very own Chamber of Trade & Commerce (see our page for further details) which provides a joined-up approach to business in South Wigston so if you’re a shopper or looking for somewhere to start a new business we can help.
